Work From Home (WFH) vs Return To Office (RTO) β where are we going to be working?
Are you an Innie or an Outie? This is not a Severance question. Apple TV+βs dark social satire on office life allows employees to leave their personalities at the door, but UK bosses would be happy if their workforce just walked through it.
This year Amazon, PwC, Santander and the WPP ad agency joined the 50% of UK businesses mandating four day office attendance, according to data from Virgin Media O2βs Business Movers Index. This is not proving universally popular.
In 2024, full-time central London office workers spent 2.7 days per week in the office β half a day longer than 2023 according to data from the Centre for Cities. Government workers and financial services workers rank a little lower β 2.2 days and 2.4 days a week respectively. The latter was unexpected given stories of city banks insisting on full attendance.

On the upside, 74% of workers are keen to come in more often, citing company incentives and a desire for a lively work culture. A survey from office designers Peldon Rose found employees wanted snacks, coffee and free soft drinks as well as plants, personal storage, breakout spaces, comfortable chairs, private kitchens, gym access and outdoor working spaces.
Conversely, nearly half of UK professionals would consider quitting if forced back on a full-time basis, according to a new poll from recruitment company Hays.
The problem? Both WFH and RTO sides can find productivity data to back their argument.
In Severance the sacrifice of live goats helped settle one issue. Health and safety guidance does not currently recommend this solution.
